By the end of the semester you are required to complete seven exercises from the following groups. All experiments are subject to reagent availability, the demands of scheduling and the instructor’s whim.
In all exercises the minimum characterization that is required includes: the IR spectrum, the UV-Vis spectrum with molar absorptivities (if colored and soluble), and either the 1H and 13C NMR spectra (if diamagnetic) or magnetic moment (if paramagnetic). Melting points should be determined only for compounds whose melting points are reported to be less than 200 °C.
Characterization beyond the minimum required (e. g., X-ray structure determination, cyclic voltammetry, etc.) will be rewarded. You must clear any additional work with your instructor before attempting any work of this sort!
In some of the exercises the identity of the product is not given. You will need to identify the product (or products) using standard methods and the additional information that you will be provided. In these cases you are also free to use any other method of analysis that we have at Truman, but you must clear it with your instructor first.
IMPORTANT! Some of these experiments are more challenging than others! You will be rewarded for attempting them, even if you do not get a “final” result.
Macrocyles (choose 2)
In these exercises you will first prepare the ligand and once the ligand has been synthesized you may choose which metal complex to synthesize. For the two template syntheses you will need to remove the metal template, and put a different metal in.
Organometallics (choose 2)
You may choose one, but not both, of the exercises involving the Mo-Mo quadruple bond.
Miscellaneous Exercises (choose 2)
You can choose one, but not two, of the exercises involving acetylacetonate.
