Template Synthesis of a Schiff-Base Macrocycle

Synthesize ligand L³ in Schröder. If you wish, you can substitute other bis-aldehydes and amines in place of 2,6-diacetylpyridine and 4-aza-heptane-1,7-diamine (also known as dipropylenetriamine or 3,3'-diaminodipropylamine).  Note that 2,6-diacetylpyridine is $33/gram (5g for $110) and as such you will need to be very careful not to waste it. 

Diethylenetriamine	Dipropylenetriamine	Triethylenetetramine	N,N'-Bis-(3-aminopropyl)ethylenediamine

CAUTION! Perchlorate salts of coordination compounds are often highly explosive! Handle with care.  Do not scrape these compounds when they are on fritted filters or other hard surfaces. Use teflon spatulas (never metal) for handling these substances.  Always test a single crystal of the perchlorate for its tendency to explode, but when it doubt treat perchlorate salts with care.
