Setting-Up the Ocean Optics USB Spectrometer System with Integrated Light Source

Last Update: September 23, 2006

The general set-up of the Ocean Optics USB system with an integrated light source is shown in Fig. 1. In this configuration the detector (either a USB 2000 or a USB 4000) is connected directly to a USB-ISS-UV/VIS light source which has an integrated sample holder.  The detector is interfaced to a computer through a USB connection.

Connecting the System

The system comes from the factory already connected and there is no reason to disconnect the detector and light source.  All one needs to do is connect the power supply (plug is on the light source on the same side as the USB cable) and connect the detector to a computer with a USB cable (on the top-left side of the spectrometer shown in Fig. 1).  For all of the laptops that we use in Chemistry at Truman the Ocean Optics spectrometers are placed in USB 1 (the top USB port on the back of a laptop).  This is done so that we can avoid having to install the USB drivers multiple times (once for each USB port).
