Summer 2008 Undergraduate Research Program

The Departments of Chemistry and Biology at Truman State University are pleased to announce a summer research opportunity for faculty and students in biology and chemistry at Truman.  The research is part of an effort by biology and chemistry to work with the Kirksville Watershed Commission to characterize the health of Forest and Hazel Creek Lakes.  The goal of the program is to formalize the interaction of students and faculty already working on water analysis as well as to integrate new students and faculty into the project so that we can better understand the influences that chemistry has on the biology of the lake and vice versa.

Four students will be supported for the summer 2008 research program.  This program will be held on campus at Truman State University from June 2 to July 25, 2007.  Participants will be expected to spend time each day during weekdays and many weekends to conduct studies on water and fish quality in lakes and/or streams in Adair county and neighboring counties.  The projects involve both field-work and laboratory work and several field trips (see project descriptions below) are planned to other cities and towns in Missouri.  In addition, student participants will be expected to prepare a project proposal during the first two weeks of the program (in partnership with their faculty mentor), present the results of their summer research during the last week of the program and prepare and present a public presentation of the work during the 12-month period following the summer activities.

Funding for this research is provided by Merck-AAAS Research is Science Education (RISE) and the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Departments of Chemistry and Biology of Truman State University.
